LGBT rights
Although human rights treaties do not specifically mention sexual orientation, the adjudicator bodies for both the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights have both determined that discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is contrary to their respective treaties. The FCO fully promotes and supports equality and non-discrimination in the enjoyment of human rights and the inadmissibility of discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation as a policy priority.
The British Embassy in Prague is pleased to express the FCO’s support for the Gay Pride March that took place in Tábor on 20th June 2009. We hope that everyone who participated enjoyed the event as a celebration of human rights and the statement it made against homophobia and discrimination. The UK is committed to promoting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the UK and overseas. Along with the Czech Republic, we were pleased to support last year's statement read out at the UN, which expressed concern about violations of human rights based on sexual orientation as human rights apply equally to every human being regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
