Child rights
The FCO has identified the rights of the child as a key human rights theme to prioritise. Children are a particularly vulnerable group in society and we believe that work to ensure the provision of full human rights and protection to children is extremely important. We support and encourage governments and other actors to promote and protect the rights of the child in accordance to international law, with a particular focus on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
In June 2008, the British Embassy in Prague supported the successful ‘Improving Child Protection in an Enlarged EU’ seminar in co-operation with the Czech Ministry of Interior. The seminar shared UK extensive practice in the field of child protection and co-ordinated activities as part of efforts to prepare EU policy for a European sex offenders register. It assessed issues on internet protection, child protection in the UK and the use of legal tools such as Child Sex Offender Register abroad. This was followed by a CEOP training program aimed at raising awareness to NGOs, police, journalists and the general public on risk assessment, community based management tools and limiting the risk of UK sex offenders who travel abroad.
