Winton Train Departure (03/09/2009)

On 1 September a historic recreation of the ‘Winton Train’ left Prague’s Hlavní Nadraži bound for London. It commemorates the story of Sir Nicholas Winton who assisted hundreds of Jewish and other children leave the Czech Republic in 1939. Members of Sir Nicholas’ family, members of the Czech Government and British Ambassador, H.E. Sian MacLeod, attended the departure of the train. Some of the original ‘Winton Children’ and young people were on board, accompanied by Ambassador MacLeod for the first stage.

The train will retrace the journey to London Liverpool Street, where it will be met Sir Nicholas. Queen Elizabeth II and former Czech president Vaclav Havel have expressed their support for the project, Winton Train – Inspiration by Goodness, in personal letters. The project has also included activities and competitions for schools and students to inspire a new generation with the story of the Winton Train. A statue by British artist Flor Kent was also unveiled at the departure ceremony.
