How to register a birth
Registering the birth of your child with the British Embassy
British Citizens can register the birth of a child born in the Czech Republic with the Embassy. This is not a requirement but is purely voluntary, and it will not lead to any extra rights regarding the nationality of your child.
In order to do this, you should first register the birth with the Czech authorities, then bring the following documents to the Consular Section in order to register the baby as British:
- Application for registration of a birth [DOC]
- Baby's original birth certificate
- Your original marriage certificate
- Both parents' long original birth certificates
- Both parents' passport or ID card
- Current fees for registration [DOC, 50KB]
Registration of a birth at the Embassy does not mean that the birth is automatically registered in the UK. It is eventually recorded in the UK when the Embassy sends its annual return to the General Records Office.
Baby Passport
If you wish to apply for a baby passport, you would also need to bring:
- Application for Baby's Passport
- 2 x passport size photos of the baby
The photographs should be:
- taken against a light coloured (white, off-white etc.) background
- clear and of good quality and not framed or backed
- printed on normal photographic paper
- full face without sunglasses, hat or other head covering unless for cultural or religious reasons

Please note that we may not accept photographs which do not meet these specifications.
